How accurate are the specs and prices on this site?
They're indicative guide figures, normalised for fair comparison: price = base variant before on-road costs, range = best available variant (WLTP-style), DC charge = claimed peak. EV specs and prices change frequently — always confirm current figures with the manufacturer or dealer before purchase.
Why is real-world range less than the WLTP figure?
WLTP is a standardised lab cycle — great for comparing cars, optimistic for real driving. Expect roughly 80–90% of WLTP around town and less at highway speeds, in temperature extremes or towing. Practical test: is the range at least double your biggest normal day?
What does charging cost compared to petrol?
Charged at home — where most charging happens — cost per km is typically a small fraction of petrol, lower again on overnight EV tariffs or solar. Public DC fast charging costs more (sometimes near cheap petrol per km), which is why home-charging ability matters so much when choosing.
Do I need a wallbox charger at home?
Not necessarily. A standard powerpoint adds ~10–15 km of range per hour — fine for many commutes overnight. A 7 kW wallbox adds ~40–50 km per hour and refills anything overnight. Big daily kms → wallbox; small daily kms → the powerpoint may be plenty. More in the buying guide.
How long do EV batteries last, and what's the warranty?
Typically 8 years / 160,000 km battery warranty with a capacity floor (often 70%). Modern packs degrade slowly; outliving the warranty is the norm. LFP packs (BYD, base Tesla, MG) are happy charging to 100% daily — the car's software manages it.
Are there government rebates or incentives?
Often — but they change frequently and vary by state: rebates, stamp duty and rego concessions come and go, and the federal FBT exemption on novated leases has been the biggest effective saving for many buyers. We don't bake incentives into our prices; check your state's current scheme before deciding.
Should I wait for next year's models?
There's always something better coming — every single year. Better frame: if a current model meets your budget, range and charging needs with margin, it won't stop meeting them when something newer launches. If nothing quite fits, waiting is rational.
Is this site independent? How do you make money?
We're independent — not owned, paid or sponsored by any manufacturer, and no model gets a leg-up in the tool. If we ever add referral partnerships via the help-me-choose service, they'll be disclosed plainly and will never change the specs or ordering.
Why isn't a particular model in the comparison?

Are electric cars safe?
Yes. Modern EVs perform strongly in ANCAP crash testing — the heavy battery low in the floor actually improves stability — and studies consistently find battery-electric cars catch fire far less often per vehicle than petrol cars. EV fires are harder to extinguish when they do occur (hence the headlines), but the rate is lower. Use quality charging equipment and follow the manufacturer's guidance, as with any car.
Can I tow with an electric car?
Many can — but braked ratings vary enormously: zero on small hatches, up to roughly 1,600–2,500 kg on larger models (Kia EV9, Volvo EX90, Polestar 3). Confirm the rating on the exact variant, and expect range to drop 30–50% while towing — plan charging stops accordingly.
Do I need AWD?
Most drivers don't. Electric torque delivery plus traction control makes RWD/FWD fine for wet city and highway driving. AWD buys quicker acceleration, surer grip on gravel/snow/steep wet driveways and better towing stability — usually at a higher price and slightly less range. Tow, live rural, or want the pace? AWD. Otherwise, save the money.
What is V2L and do I need it?
Vehicle-to-Load powers normal appliances from the car's battery — typically 2–3.6 kW via a charge-port adapter or onboard outlets. Brilliant for camping, tools and blackouts. Common on Hyundai/Kia 800-volt models, most BYDs and the MG4 — check the spec sheet. (V2G — exporting to the grid — is different and still emerging in Australia.)
What's public charging like in Australia?
All new EVs here use the CCS2 plug for DC. Major networks: Chargefox, Evie, BP Pulse, Ampol AmpCharge, NRMA — plus Tesla Superchargers, many now open to other brands. Apps like PlugShare map them all. Road-trip technique: charge 10–80% (the fast part of the curve), don't wait for 100%.
Do EVs lose range in hot or cold weather?
Yes — both extremes cost some range (climate control draws power; batteries prefer mild temps). Cold is the bigger hit (commonly 10–20%, more alpine); Aussie summer heat costs a little. Cars with heat pumps cope better, and preconditioning while plugged in largely hides the loss.
What do EVs cost to service and insure?
Servicing: generally cheaper — no oil or plugs, fewer moving parts, regen braking spares the pads (tyres can wear a touch faster from weight). Insurance: currently tends higher than an equivalent petrol car due to repair costs, but quotes vary widely — genuinely worth shopping around.
What happens to EV batteries at the end of their life?
Packs typically outlast their 8-year warranties by a wide margin. After car duty they're increasingly reused as second-life stationary storage, then recycled — Australian recyclers recover lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper, and manufacturers accept packs back. Out-of-warranty replacements are rare, and pack prices keep falling.
